課程概述

Animation is booming in the 21st century. Japanese manga and anime are popular around the world and Japanese government policy is focused on developing the industry as a source of “soft power.” Computer-generated animation is now a basic tool not only for cinema, but for the rapidly growing game industry. Cartoon mascots now represent police departments and other government bureaus, cities and small towns, NGOs, ethnic groups, etc..
This class will explore an anthropological approach to animation. We will look at animation as a medium, and industry, and a youth culture. Readings will include recent ethnographies of the contemporary Japanese animation industry and animation fandoms in Japan, Taiwan, and elsewhere. We will also be placing contemporary animation practices in the context of historical traditions of “bringing objects to life.” These traditions include animation in analog media, such as puppetry. More importantly, we will be looking at how contemporary animation may (or may not) build on culturally specific ways of dividing the world between the material and the immaterial, objects and subjects. Thus, we will explore what some classic anthropological concepts – animism, fetishism, performativity, etc. – have to offer the study of 21st century digital culture, and vice versa.

課程目標
To introduce students to theories and methodologies that anthropologists can use to research contemporary animation industries and fan cultures, as well as to familiarize students with classical theories of materiality, fetishism, object-relations, and related concepts.

課程要求
1. All students are expected to attend class regularly, to do the readings, and to participate in class conversation.
2. Reading reports:
Each student will write brief reports, and present them in class, on 6 readings. We will make up a schedule for these reports in the first 2 weeks of class. Each report should include:
a. A brief summary of the argument. What questions is the writer asking? What methods, what kinds of evidence, does the writer use to answer those questions? How do they answer the questions they ask?
b. Questions for class discussion, and your own comments on the article. You should do the other readings for the week, and try and draw some connections between your article and the others.
You must turn in a written copy of each report to me, either in hard copy or by e-mail, by the evening BEFORE the class when you will be presenting. The written report should not be longer than 2 pages; presentations should not take any longer than 10 minutes. If there are any parts of the reading you don’t understand, feel free to contact me and ask questions while you are working on your report.
3. Research project: Each student will design and carry out a media-related research project. Remember, these projects can’t be too ambitious – you have to be able to complete your research over the course of the semester. Each student will present their project proposal during one class session, and turn in their final written report at the end of the term.
a. Each student should turn in a preliminary proposal to me by week 10.
b. During the last class, students will present their proposals – including the topic and why it’s important, theoretical approach, and methodology, and their research findings up to that point – in a 20-minute in-class presentation. The presenter should prepare some questions that they want their classmates to help them on. Classmates should give constructive feedback that will really help the presenter create a viable project and a clear, strong argument.
